Rent Assistance Program Pushes Back Day It'll Accept Applications - Block Club Chicago

CHICAGO — A program to help people pay rent during the pandemic is facing a delay and won’t reopen applications until December.

The Illinois Rental Payment Program was supposed to reopen Monday, allowing people to apply for assistance with paying rent to ensure they stay housed. But a vendor needs “additional time to ensure its application platform is functioning properly,” so the Illinois Housing Development Authority has had to push back the reopening to Dec. 6, according to a news release.

Though the reopening is delayed, Illinoisans who are picked for the program will still get their money before the end of 2021, according to the housing authority.

Applications will be accepted Dec. 6-Jan. 9 online. Once open, people who apply must have an unpaid rent balance and have experienced financial hardship due to the pandemic, among other eligibility requirements.

Renters in need of immediate help can contact the Illinois Department of Human Services.
