Two artists share a love of working on paper - Eureka Times-Standard

Local artists Georgia Long and Jay Brown have been friends for many years, and both focus on working on paper. That shared focus and mutual respect culminates this month at Arts Alive! with a joint show in the C Street Hall Gallery, upstairs at 208 C St. in Old Town Eureka. Arts Alive! takes place Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m.

“Paper has great flexibility and is the ideal material when working in the restricted circumstances of a pandemic,” Long said. “Paper allows for gouache, oil, cold wax, watercolor and graphite. When we were sure we could exhibit again, my first choice was to collaborate with Jay, whose work on paper I have admired for close to 20 years. His background in printmaking, design and Asian aesthetic would be the perfect complement to my own work, and we both hope this multifaceted abstract show will delight the viewer with intriguing composition, texture and palette.”

Long grew up in the Greater Los Angeles area. Early exposure, nurtured by her mother, who taught art, laid the groundwork for her own interest in painting. She is self-taught and has been creating professionally since 1990. Design, composition, texture, color and rhythm have, and still are, important elements. The abstract works on Arches oil paper in this show were created using cold wax, graphite, paint sticks and oils. Long spent many years in Southern Humboldt before moving to Eureka in 2004. Her work can be viewed at www.glongstudio.com.

Brown has lived in Humboldt County since 1971. He graduated from Humboldt State University in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in art —printmaking specialty. Brown was a founding partner of Bug Press, where he worked until 1979, then he worked in media services and as a graphic artist at HSU. He has been creating personal art since 1979, representational and abstract in equal measure. For Brown, representational art tends toward landscape, atmospherics, nature with a humorous slant, whereas his abstract art is influenced by Adolph Gottlieb, Paul Klee and Miss Miller, third-grade teacher. He uses multiple media on paper and other fairly flat surfaces, singly or in combination, created with humor, color and commentary with craftsmanship and spontaneity. Brown can be reached at gouache8@icloud.com.
