HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings Utilities Department teamed up with local nonprofits to help relieve stress and keep people warm during the colder months. It’s all a part of their annual ‘Share the Warmth’ program that gives Hastings Utilities customers a chance to give back to the community and help pay the bills of those in need.

The fund has been keeping people’s homes heated since it first started in 2001. To sign up to give to Share the Warmth, people can fill out a form and choose how much they would like to give.

“A customer can state a specified amount that they’d like to contribute each month on their utility bill or they can do a lump sum if that’s something that interests them,” said Hastings Utilities director of administration, Derek Zeisler. “One-hundred percent of it goes directly towards paying a customer’s heating bills that are in need of help.”

Beginning this year, people are now given the option to donate to the Share the Warmth online.

Zeisler said the utilities department was working alongside local nonprofits to make the service possible.

“This is a program that was brought to us by some agencies in town that they’ve seen a need for,” he said. “We’re happy to utilize our skills to help facilitate that and bring it to our customers to utilize if they so choose.”

The organizations that Hastings Utilities paired up with for the program is the Hastings Salvation Army, Catholic Social Services and the Community Action Plan.

Zeisler continued, anyone wanting to see if they qualify for bill payment assistance through the Share The Warmth fund should reach out to the Hastings Salvation Army.
