DURHAM – Duke offensive lineman Kade Parmelly is set to participate in the SPIRAL Tropical Bowl while defensive backs Josh Blackwell and Leonard Johnson have accepted invitations to the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.
The Tropical Bowl will take place at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 15, 2022. The NFLPA Bowl is set for Jan. 29, 2022 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
Parmelly is the sixth Blue Devil to be invited to the Tropical Bowl, joining Dwayne Norman (2015), Lucas Patrick (2015), Tre Hornbuckle (2019), Edgar Cerenord (2019) and Devery Hamilton from a year ago.
Parmelly, a 6-3, 305-pound graduate student from Abilene, Texas, was a valuable member of the Duke offensive line in 2021 after transferring from Abilene Christian. Parmelly was on the field for 488 snaps in 12 games with one start. Duke finished sixth in the ACC in fewest sacks allowed with 27 and helped protect an offense that accumulated 5,011 yards of total offense. Parmelly also blocked for running back Mataeo Durant to rush for a program record 1,241 yards this season.
Blackwell and Johnson become the seventh and eighth Blue Devils to be invited to the NFLPA Bowl. They join Takoby Cofield (2014), Max McCaffrey (2015), Breon Borders (2016), Trevon McSwain (2019), Koby Quansah (2019) and Deon Jackson from a year ago.
Blackwell finished his senior season tying for the team lead with seven pass breakups in addition to 35 tackles and one tackle for loss in 12 games, including 11 starts. He returned seven punts for 54 yards (7.71) during his final season as well. Throughout his career, the Buford, Ga., native tallied 96 tackles, two tackles for loss, one caused fumble and an impressive 20 pass breakups in 37 career games (28 starts). He was on the field for 2,235 career snaps, despite missing the majority of his junior season due to injury.
Johnson wrapped up his last season in Durham with 35 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions and five pass breakups. In 47 career games, including 39 starts, Johnson amassed 165 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, two sacks, six interceptions, 17 pass breakups, three caused fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two quarterback hurries. Johnson scored one touchdown in his career, a 53-yard interception return against Baylor in 2018. He was on the field for 2,961 career snaps.
