Letter | Choosing a candidate who doesn’t accept PAC money - Santa Cruz Sentinel

I’m supporting Manu Koenig for County Supervisor for the 1st District because he brings a fresh perspective to the challenges in Santa Cruz County, something we sorely need. I am also concerned that the incumbent, John Leopold, takes Political Action Committee (PAC) contributions. Manu does not accept PAC money.

Leopold received PAC money during the primary campaign from SMART Transport of Olmstead, Ohio; Bldg. and Construction Trades, Castroville; Bay Area Election Committee, San Jose; National Union of Healthcare Workers, Sacramento; and Operating Engineers, Alameda. All are on the public record.

Taking PAC money has a funny way of committing a supervisor to vote the way the PAC wants, and I believe no supervisor should commit to vote a certain way on issues, like pay and benefits, before his or her election. Supervisors should judge each issue on what is in the public interest, not on any prior commitments.

— Rowland Rebele, Santa Cruz

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at www.santacruzsentinel.com/submit-letters.
