Three Mohawk Valley companies, including two in Utica, are among 12 across New York state to share in $6.9 million in state incentives to retool to make pandemic-related supplies, according to an announcement by state officials.
The grants are intended to guard against shortages of supplies to protect essential health workers and the public should a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic hit the state, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said in Thursday’s announcement.
“We are building the infrastructure needed for the future and by supporting local companies’ pivot to new areas of production, we will be in a better position to avoid supply and demand issues and secure the items we need both quickly and at reasonable prices,” Cuomo said.
The grants are also intended to promote self-sufficiency within the state, Cuomo said, which was hard hit by dependence on companies in China and elsewhere in the early stages of the pandemic.
Mohawk Valley region companies receiving grants:
Environmental Composites on Bleecker Street in Utica, maker of advanced textiles and filtration products, is getting $772,259 toward its investment of $3.2 million to increase
production of N95 masks to a target of 6 million a month
and creating an estimated
50 jobs.
Genesis Disposables, maker of disposable garments and accessories in Frankfort, Herkimer County, is getting $135,000 and investing $390,000 to produce 65,000 level 1 and 2 isolation gowns and creating 20 jobs.
HPK Industries, maker of advanced disposable garments on Broad Street in Utica, is to get $1 million and invest more than $6.6 million to produce 1 million units and create 30 jobs. It will produce three-ply surgical masks, level-3 barrier-type gowns and level-2 gowns.
Other companies receiving the state funds are in New York City, Long Island, Ithaca, and the Buffalo area.
